If you are attending the 2008 Professional Developers Conference you received a pre-beta Windows 7 build today (6801) which contains many features the Windows Media Center team has been developing over the past year. It’s my pleasure to take a few minutes to outline some of these new features for you. If you install this build do keep in mind it’s considered an ‘Alpha’ experience meaning some features may not be polished or work quite as well as they will in the final product AND things may change (mostly for the better we hope) between now and beta and RTM. So let's jump right in...

Start Menu

Start Menu

The Start Menu gets a subtle refresh both in text treatment and iconography size. You can now see more items at any given time without feeling cluttered, and the readability has really improved. The new Start Menu is also designed to always overlay the current playing experience so it stays in one place. Another thing you will notice is it now remembers your last location strip between sessions (prior versions always launched to the TV + Movies strip).

Now Playing

We got a lot of complaints about the postage stamp size of the video thumbnail for Now Playing in Windows Vista. You’ll be pleased to note it has returned to its larger size in Windows 7 -- no more squinting! Another thing you will notice in this screen capture is the tile title has been moved out of the focusable rectangle -- we can now do much longer names as a result (a great usability enhancement for international versions of Windows Media Center where the languages make for really long titles).

Music

The user friendliness and design ethos really moves a notch up, especially for those with large libraries. [Note: Some of the user experience enhancements transcend any singular Windows Media Center area – I’ll introduce them throughout this post and try to note when the feature is shared.]

Music Library With Album Art Alternatives

Do you have obscure albums with no album art available? In prior versions all of these would have a blue background + white text. With Windows 7 we mix it up a bit with random colors for these which makes them ‘blend in’ with your other album art for the Music Library gallery.

Music Details

Details is another shared feature throughout the product. You can think of details as a slide deck which puts much used features closer to your fingertips compared to prior versions. You move left and right to switch between panes and up and down to select items on that pane. This really bubbles up features which have been less than discoverable in the past.

Music Now Playing Animation In

 Music Now Playing Interactive Mode

Music Now Playing received a large makeover and I think you are really going to like it. When you start playback of music you navigate to the Now Playing page as in prior versions. After a while we fade out the action items and animate your album art into a slowly scrolling wall of covers and occasionally switch the currently playing album cover and metadata. When you press a button on the remote or move the mouse we bring back the action items and keep the wall of covers up in the background.

Music Rating Shortcuts

Rating your content has never been easier in Windows Media Center. By enabling Rating Shortcuts you can press the 1 through 5 buttons on the remote or keyboard to rate the music (or picture as this is one of the shared features) in real time.

Music Turbo Scroll

Those folks with large music libraries will *really* like what we call ‘Turbo Scroll’ – another shared feature. When you hold down the left or right remote control buttons for a while we transition into an interface which presents the content in alphabetical chunks. Letting go of the button when you see the letter combination you want will immediately take you to that position in your library.

Music Shared Library

Shared Libraries are built on top of the Home Group features in Windows 7 and is a shared feature across Music, Pictures, Videos and Recorded TV. Folks who have been clamoring for ‘Softsled’ will very much enjoy this feature as it allows you to peruse and enjoy content from multiple computers on your home network. In this screen capture I’m demonstrating how I can select my local music library or that shared by another user on my network named ‘Ethel’ on a computer named ‘Laptop’. Once selected, I can browse Ethels content in Windows Media Center.

Pictures

Photo enthusiasts have much to enjoy in Windows 7 in Windows Media Center – like music, the usability goes up a notch or two.

Ambient Slide Show Start

Ambient Slide Show Zoom

There is a new Ambient Slideshow which will launch as a screen saver as well as when you invoke the new Play Favorites on the Start Menu. This pulls from your pictures rated 3 stars or higher. This slideshow features some nice zoom out (first screenshot) and zoom in animations (second screenshot) as well as slideshows within slideshows (kind of hard to explain -- it makes sense once you watch this new feature in action). If you are a photography fan and want to enjoy your pictures in an unstructured way you are going to really like this feature.

Here is a view of the enhanced Picture Library. I'll draw your attention to the Ratings, Slide Shows and Shared pivots -- all new for Windows 7. Ratings allow you to sort by rating (0-5 stars) like you can with tags we added in Windows Vista. Shared inherits the Shared Library in common with Music, Videos and Recorded TV. On the Slide Shows pivot you can play back slideshows...

...created with the new Slideshow Creator -- one of my favorite features. You can choose pictures or music in the creator and save the results for later playback.

Picture Library Turbo Scroll

Turbo Scroll also puts in an appearance for Pictures for a nice enhancement in large libraries – hold down the left or right buttons on the remote to transition into a user experience which allow you to fast forward through pictures – let go of the button to move to that point in the gallery. I’ll take a moment to note the static screen captures here don’t really do Turbo Scroll justice – the animations are quite nice!

Picture Details

Picture Details bubbles up many of the simple photo editing features in Windows Media Center as well as allows you to rate the picture.

Slideshow in Start Menu Now Playing

In prior versions the slideshow disappeared from view when you pressed the Green Button and the only way to return was to use the back button (if the slideshow was still on the backstack) or go back through the library to start fresh. Now the slideshow is persisted as an experience in Now Playing including picture transitions – you can select to easily return back to the full screen slideshow. [That’s me taking on Ruby Beach taking pictures – shameless self-promotion, sorry.]

Videos

I've elected to not take any screenshots for this section -- not much has changed visually for this feature, so I'll just enumerate what's new from a functionality perspective.

  • The Video Library, like Pictures, Music and Recorded TV gets the Shared Library feature so you can enjoy content from other computers on your network.
  • H.264 playback is now supported out of the box with Windows 7 -- including on Media Center Extenders – both standalone hardware implementations AND on the XBox 360 when in Extender mode. I know a few people on http://www.thegreenbutton.com who will rejoice. ;-)
  • Video Play All allows you to play all of the videos in a specific gallery in a continuous play list – you can now easily excite the neighbors with your vacation and home videos one after the other!
  • Videos now have parity with Recorded TV in the area of bookmarks – you can now resume previously played videos where you left off.

TV

For starters, you get all of the enhancements made available with the TV Pack (including those for United States customers). For more information on the TV Pack check out this post at The Green Button: http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/thread/282555.aspx. If you recall, the TV Pack was designed to enable TV standards in Asia and Europe. There are some nice additions in this area for Windows 7...

When you move your mouse you will notice the seek bar looks a little different. It's now 'clickable' which will take you to that relative position in the content. Many folks use the mouse with Windows Media Center and this feature has been wanted by that group for a while. [Note: This also works for content in the Video Library.]

When Recorded TV (or video) is playing and you press the right or left arrow buttons you get the Now Playing experience which bubbles up features and functionality previously buried behind the More Information button (like Zoom) or Settings (Captions) as well as information and details (like related content) from the guide. (Those of you with access to Internet TV in the United States may find this familiar -- an earlier incarnation of this approach was used for that experience.)

Not much has changed in the Recorded TV gallery from a look and feel standpoint, but this screen capture does show the new 'All Content' view available with Shared Libraries. If you have multiple Windows Media Center enabled PCs in the house you can now enjoy that content across the network on those computers without going to great lengths to hack registries and apply folder sharing voodoo.

Selecting a Recorded TV show will bring up the new Details experience -- as with other experiences in this shared feature, go left and right to switch between panes.

Here is the guide in Turbo Scroll mode (hold down the left or right arrow button on your remote control or keyboard). Note the correct high definition channel mapping from the TV Pack as well as the [ HD ] logo embedded in the grid entries.

Selecting an item in the guide also brings up the new details. Note the new [ HD ] logo which helps you identify high definition content. The slide and pane metaphor really begins to shine with TV (and movies) because it does such a great job of putting resources once buried across many screens 'closer' to you.

Movies

You'll notice the Movies experience has now been given a strip of its own with a few enhancements.

The improved Movies Guide has an [ HD ] pivot which makes finding that visual fidelity much easier.

Movie Details again brings many layers of pages into a single location -- it's now much easier to jump around and find related content.

Extras

We've listened to our developers and I'm happy to announce a new feature called 'Extras' which will be replacing Online Media. I'll have a post out in the next couple of days with more information on this 'still in the planning phase' feature. As part of the rethinking of this area of the produce we've greatly simplified the gallery to make it much more user friendly. Gone are the myriad of [seemingly random] pivots (which were really filters). Now this gallery behaves much like the others in the product whereby the pivots are sorts and all of your applications are represented in each view.

I don’t really have a screen capture of this next one but it’s worth noting: Application developers (more for you folks in a separate post) will be happy to know we’ve increased the number of custom Start Menu strips to a maximum of 20 (up from only 2 in Windows Vista).

On Screen Keyboard

Any time you need to perform text entry we've got a new on screen keyboard for your enjoyment. This feature alone will bring much 'Spousal Acceptance Factor' to your Windows Media Center experience. [Bonus: This same exact on screen keyboard is available for developers to invoke from their applications.]

Gadget

This is the gadget in its default configuration allow you to play your favorite music, slideshow (3 stars or better) or both. You can click the green button to launch Windows Media Center.

If you've configured TV and recorded shows they will appear in the order they are recorded. The gadget can also include content from the Internet TV feature.

Here are the gadget settings. Turning off Internet TV and New Recorded TV will return the gadget to it's default, out of box configuration.

Well, that's it for now -- there are other features in the build I've not covered here. If you discover one and want to know more let me know and I'll try to post additional information.

I hope you've enjoyed this walk through of Windows Media Center in the PDC Build of Windows 7. We've been busting at the seams to share what we've been working on these past months and are still hard at work making this the best version to date. We welcome any feedback you'd like to provide or questions you'd like to ask.

Thanks for the post - some great changes coming up (esp H264!!).

Just wondering if you will be implementing a better way to organise Recorded TV, ie can we have 'folders' for Soaps, Music, etc etc all controlled through Media Center UI?

Thx, Rich

Very cool, thanks for sharing!

However - unless we see firmware updates from benevolent IHV's does this mean MCE7 will require new extenders?

Very, very slick. The music now playing is sick; personal favorite is the details view. It's great to see that "good things" are coming.

Questions:

- is possible to display "shared libraries" in aggregate? I know where the content is, but my family won't.
- how is a movie marked as HD?
- can non video_ts/SBE types be added to the movies section (i.e. MKV)?
- anything for background addin builders (events, metadata access, keys)?
- for those of us that couldn't make it to PDC, will there be a public beta?

Thanks for sharing. Can you also share what kind of system specs to run 7MC smoothly?

Charlie,

Thanks so much for the info. I definitely feel vindicated in just waiting for Windows 7 to arrive. I really hope it comes this summer.

As you keep us up to date with the changes that Windows 7 will bring, can you please comment on Webguide and what it's future will be? From what I have read online it does not work with the current TV Pack. Since this will be in Windows 7 I am hoping that there is a plan to update Webguide in time for Windows 7. Any news you can give would be great.

Thanks again for the sneak peek. I am VERY excited about where my Media Center is headed.

Nice job, This looks like a really nice evolution of the product. I am glad to see an incremental step like this. Rather than one feature standing out for me, I like that fact that you guys have tried to incorporate some suggestions from the enthusiasts on TGB. h.264 is huge! Now please start showing some love for your northern neighbours and get OTA ATSC support for Canada.

Great Post, Thanks Charlie.

WOW! Softsled! ATSC subchannel data! H.264 (not that big of a deal for me, but I'll show some enthusiasm for our friends overseas)!

I like the new Details views. I like all of the the updates to Music & Pictures. Overall, this looks like something I can really be excited about!

It appears that TV Pack is a major springboard for much of the new DVR capabilities. That's a good thing -- provided that ALOT of focus goes into fixing the existing bugs in TV Pack (missed recordings & Media Center Store crashes being the worst bugs I encountered). MSFT developers should really tap into the potential of the Green Button forums for bug reports on the TV Pack "Extended Beta" that's going on right now. :-)

Also, I'll note that MSFT's openness regarding these upcoming changes is VERY refreshing!! Especially after the Fiji/TV-Pack debacle.

But I Still Have Requests:
- Ability to add more than one additional icon to the prebuilt icon strips
- Give "Videos" its own strip. Don't lump it in with "Pictures".
- Retain Zoom settings on a per-channel basis. Not per-tuner.
- I want DVRMSToolbox to work in Windows 7!!!!
- Implement some of Webguide's features. MSFT did hire the author, after all.
- Real 16x9 thumbnails for Recorded TV. It works for Internet TV...
- Make "Burn to Disc" viable. In VMC, it's too slow to be of any use.
- Ability to record TV directly to a network drive (or Windows Home Server).
- Ability to make the Guide default to a Favorite channel list.
- Assuming WTV lives on, make it compatible with programs in Windows 7.
- Internet PPV content for Media Center.
- How about a predictive text entry method like we have on cellphones?
- A visualization for FM Radio.
- Ability to record FM Radio.
- Ability to archive Recorded TV to a special menu/folder.
- Ability to output sound simultaneously from more than one device
- A superfluous weather overlay to complement the current time.
- A "Family Mode" where family members can tag if they've watched recorded TV.

...and seriously, "The Waltons"? :-)

That great looking onscreen keyboard made me wonder if the Xbox 360 Chatpad will finally be supported? It's been kind of irritating having a reasonably functional keyboard for a year that is no use when trying to type text into Vista MC.

Looks great! All I want to know is, can I upgrade my existing VMC OCUR/DCT setup to run this with no problems and without buying an entirely new machine? I sure hope so!
Thanks for all your hard work eHome team!

Great job! It is amazing how you all crank this info out. Now if you could just put it into no geek, techno/hobbyist terms and start selling it to the public for consumtion and real life usage, then you have found the holy grail my friend...

Great stuff.
A few more requests:
- support for FLAC files
- when recording 2 consecutive shows on the same channel using the same tuner, honor 'Start when' and 'Stop when' settings for both shows

To answer the few MCX questions:
- Extenders that work today with Windows Vista will work with Windows 7. Scenarios that are part of Windows Vista today will continue to work in Windows 7 with existing devices. We are in the process of qualifying the new Windows 7 features on existing devices. It’s possible that to fully support all the new Windows Media Center features of Windows 7, some devices may require an update.

- the xbox chatpad will now work natively in MCX. If you want to use it with Windows Vista you can bring up the Xbox OSK and then start typing.

Looks pretty awesome. Would love to start testing this out and blogging about it.

Interested in playing around with the H.264 format for video. I need to figure out how to convert my .TOD files and DVD videos into the H.264 format, it sounds like this is the way to go going forward.

Like the idea that I can build slide shows by date. It sounds like I'll be able to say take my "family" photos folder and then say show me all photos taken in the last 2 months if I'm reading this correctly with date criteria. That would be pretty cool.

I'm missing a lot of album artwork so I like how the new set up camouflages this. I used to play around with an album art finder app to try and get more of this. It would be cool if MCE could somehow even find missing album artwork for you.

The "Gadget" function looks pretty slick to auto launch your favorite slide show/music combos. Will this work with extenders?

*Love* the idea of rating your music with your remote while listening to it by simply pushing a number button. I could really use this. Is there a way to tell MCE that you want it to use the numbers to rate music not photos when in a photo/music combo?

Lately I've been less than satisfied with rating music with either MCE (very difficult to be made easier with 7) or even WMP itself. It seems that with my large WMP library that it frequently gets corrupted. I usually don't know that it's been corrupted and only find out when I try to rip a CD and find that WMP won't recognize any of the metadata on the CD. The only way to fix this is to delete the database and reload all my music (takes over 24 hours). The problem is though that when I'm rating songs in WMP or MCE it's not actually saving the ratings to the song titles in the file as it should (and as it's marked in the preferences of WMP) and when the new library populates I've lost weeks and months of ratings that I did. I lost a few thousand ratings the other day when I rebuilt the database that were never written to the files.

Still would love to see official support for Netflix Watch Now, I know that there is a hack program to make this work on an extender but MSFT's DRM prevents my Netflix "Watch Now" from playing on my own setup.

It would also be good to see better interaction with Windows Firewall and the HD Homerun tuner. It seems like after most Window auto updates that the installation software on HD Homerun has to be re-run in order to get MCE to recognize the tuner. There's a sticky thread on HD Homerun's website discussing this.

Keep up the great work Charlie. You guys have the best home media system on the market today.

Great stuff!! I have all my photos and ratings stored in Windows Live Photo Gallery. What type of integration will exist with MCE7 and WLPG?
Tuesday, October 28, 2008 10:14:29 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
Hi Charlie,
First of all, great changes! There are still several issues I'm having with the current Media Center that wasn't mentioned so I'm hoping you could clarify the status of some of these:

1) CoverArt Thumbnails: We have suffered with terrible low quality thumbnails for years, even when we have high resolution covers in the folders or embedded in the MP3 tags. This really ruins the HD experience. Has this been fixed?
2) Pointless Menu: The "Replay/Delete/Done" prompt that's displayed after each played video is pointless and only forces you to make unnecessary extra keypresses. Please return to the library with the just played video in focus instead. The menu also doesn't "wrap", resulting in extra keypresses to reach the bottom of the menuitems.
3) Read-Only Mode: Will there now be a way to prevent deletion of media from withing media center? I really don't trust my guests/relatives/kids not to delete my media files.
4) Collapsed Folders: My media is spread over several HDD's and using identical folder names, for example "D:\Movies", "E:\Movies", and so on. Showing them as individual folders in Media Center isn't very intuitive. Collapsing them to a single "Movies" folder in the library would be much more useful.
5) It would be useful if the main menu would remember which item in each strip was last selected between restarts, so the last used item is automatically preselected.

Great stuff,

Really only one question that has not been asked. Will the Divx be supported as it is in the Xbox dashboard? As far as I know, h.264 is different from native Divx support. Really hope this is there as using transcode 360 on the 360 extender is a pain.

Cheers!

I think the new changes look great...the only feedback I'd say is that the 'details' UI for different bits, like the UI for Movie Details, looks like a plain blue strip...hopefully this is going to be tuned for the final release to be more in line with the rest of the interface?

Really looking forward to this release and +1 on bringing some better ways to organise RecordedTV...I'd like to see options to be able to easily move a movie I've recorded from TV over to my Videos selection.

Looking forward to more details!!

Hi,

The updates look great. But, the one thing I'm not seeing in this update is the content integration that people now expect OOTB.

I'm talking YouTube, Amazon MP3 downloads, NetFlix, etc.

As I'm sure you must be aware, this content-to-GUI integration is what has catapulted Apple out of niche and into mainstream. People want the integration. Heck, *I* want the integration!

Yes, I can get YouTube streaming from Yoogle, but it's not professional-quality and not highly reliable. Yes, I can get NetFlix from vmcNetFlix, but it's not official and it requires knowing about it to install it.

I want a last.fm / pandora type service built-in where whatever is streaming allows me to instantly purchased via the WMC GUI. Yes, someone developed mceFM (which is aweomse), but it's not official and it might become defunct! C'mon, isn't this a win-win-win for everyone?

Microsoft is a software company, I get it. But Media Center is just dying for some hooks into online services that fully integrate into the experience. I know it'll take more resources. I know it might create some proprietary precident. But, for heaven's sake, there are some basic on-line content sources that people now get OOTB in their cell phones! And, of course, AppleTV is focusing on these low-hanging fruit as well.

WMC is the best media operating system in the world. But it won't be forever. Please step up the content integration piece of the pie. It's what really draws people in!

Just wondering how many tuners are now supported ?

Also does the DVB-S/S2 (not mentioned in this article but read about elsewhere) support multiple satellites using DISEQC for multiswitches /positioners ?

Great preview. But, I'm kinda disappointed, you are trying to tell me we only have have two artiste in common? Mariah Carey and Phill Collins.
Wednesday, October 29, 2008 2:04:56 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
I would hope to see improvements in the awful album thumbnail tags. Even in those cases where you embed high quality album artwork, WMP (by design!) has no scaling mechanism to even shrink it to screen size.

You mention having better blended substitutes for missing album thumbnails, yet at least two of your images above show the awful old icon with the move film and music note!

Is the image/photo display in Media Player still going to pull in every piece of music album art and mix it in with my personal photos?

h.264 support is great! I hope that means h.264 video files in the .mkv Matroska container format will work. It will be nice if I could stream mkv AVC h.264 files to the XBOX 360.

Would be great if you add an open source Media Center gadget system, much like what Yahoo and Intel are building to work on Internet capable TV sets. For example, it would be great if you could have a 5 day forecast gadget overlayed on top of the playing video. Or you can also have a stock ticker gadget, or a news gadget, etc. The ideal thing would be make an API for this Media Center gadget system so developers can write their own gadgets and thus add value to an already cool product.
Wednesday, October 29, 2008 4:41:58 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
Media center is great, but it will never move out of a niche geek product until you start to understand your target market. It's absolutely flabergasting to me that you spend years developing this cool product and you let OEM's design stupid looking extenders that no non-IT pro would ever put next to their TV. Look at what comes up on your main extender page: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/products/winfamily/mediacenter/features/extender.mspx WTF I mean WTF I really really mean it, who wants to put a geeky looking router next to their TV. You guys just don't get it - the SW is great but Apple is going to win because the Apple TV doesn't look like crap. And while I'm on this soapbox what consumer is going to understand what a "Windows 7 Media Center Extender" does? It would be so simple to fix - it's sad to see this lack of a clue go on year after year.

Can you please include a nice simple web browser in WMC? That would help encourage some of my friends to ditch their old MSNTV units.

And how about themes? The blue is nice, but I'd like a bit more color choice. Especially a sleek black.

- Any chance we'll see DVB-C QAM support by RTM? Lots of European and Asian markets have adopted DVB-C. This will complete the digital cable support.
- Please make the slideshow inherit the awesome effects contained in Windows (Live) Photo Gallery. In general, better WLPG integration
- WTV support everywhere (in Live Movie Maker, Microsoft's encoders etc etc). WTV playback support for Windows XP should be a commitment. And DVRMSToolbox working in Windows 7
- Ability to output sound simultaneously from more than one device (please I too cannot do without this)
- Support for lossless audio formats
- An extender that'll work all the way from Windows XP to Windows 7 (sorry don't point me to the Xbox 360)

Quite interesting indeed

I have had some issues with the fact that I don't give write access to media on my shared media and as a result the video library took a long time to give control back to me once the video library is clicked. What the VMC is trying to do is compete with vista for cpu cycles while I am trying to navigate through my media(video files) on the network to create thumbs. I don't care for thumbs at all. I would rather see the names in the placeholders for the videos which is more useful. Since once the thumbs load up the only way to figure what you have highlighted is to look the the bottom of the screen and so you also are not able to figure out where the required media is either. To combat this a guy in the Aussie forums has created a small proggy to create 0kb thumbs which does a great job of leaving the names alone in the placeholders and easily fixes the problem. I was wondering if this issue can be fixed at your end. Either a list view or "do not load thumbs" option would be appropriate.

Other things like support for pay TV using valid subs cards which I pay for would be nice DVB-S/S2.

There is a plugin which lets you edit the recorded TV called toolbox-try incorporating this feature.

MUSIC - ALBUM Artist View mode gone ?
=====================================

I noticed that ALBUM ARTISTS was missing from music ? Why ?!!!

Album Artists view is great for seeing what Albums and singles are from each artist. Its usually the only view I regularly use. Artists view doesnt display cover art, albums is just a list of album names but not in artist order (useless to me)

For my collection ALBUM ARTIST view is ideal:

ALISON MOYET (the Album Artist)
All Cried Out [the Album (single) name]
That Ole Devil Called Love [the album (single) name]

In above example in ALBUM ARTIST view, Alison Moyet is listed with each of the titles under her and each album or single has it's own cover art.

Support for changing WTV to WMV or DVR-MS for PMC (and other portable media) users so that users can carry on using their PMC as MS scrapped the PMC VERY SOON after Toshiba launched the Gigabeat S60 !

Fix cover art issue so that AlbumArt.jpg etc are not created and the overwriting of users cover art is stopped. Read embedded pictures at all times. Have to have media player pointing to read only music share to get cover art to work properly in VMC, but media player 11 then blanks out some.

Just 2 questions.

Will we have native Blu-Ray support???

Will we Finally be able to use High Rez. images for album art in My Music!?

Can't wait to upgrade all my VMC machines to this - shared libraries, YAY! A couple questions I didn't see mentioned above:

1) what's the touch integration like in MC7? Scrolling via swipes/gestures? Or just the same little pop-up arrows?

2) will MC7 support installable WIC codecs so I can finally view my RAW photos?

Thanks!

I don't know if you have any say on this or not, but is the highest-level of Media Center customizable? For instance, I *loathe* all sports, but in Vista Media Center, there is a sports option! I want it to go away because I hate sports, but I can't find a way to do it. Maybe it can be done with some crazy registry editing or xml modification or something, but ideally the Windows 7 MC would allow me to turn things on and off.

So: Is it possible?

It looks nice, and has some slight usability improvements, but where is the major progress? Two years after Vista we should be seeing real advancements. Web Guide support, streaming, Blu-ray, DVD Library management tool, native apps that really push the realms of possibility.

It seems like you've spent two years just making it look slicker. But it already looked great, make it actually work great!

I don't understand the need for a fancier way to look at photos when there is serious functionality missing!

Oh forgot to ask for feature to record whats in the buffer for TV

I do agree with all the posts above. There is a serious need to make it more functional. There should not be a need for other people to create plugins for functionality which should have been included in the first place. I hear some people rave about Apple and their products being almost perfect, I still like windows much better. But for us to invest more to get a slight upgrade is not worth my time.

I like many of the feature suggestions mentioned above like...
-Buffered TV Record
-Web Browser

One I haven't seen is support for multiple Media Center PC integration? Extenders can link to a Media Center PC and record TV. If I have multiple Media Center Computers each with Digital and Analog Tuners - why cannot I schedule a recording from my Family Room Media Center on my basement Media Center PC? Perhaps with your acquisition of WebGuide which basically has those features - you can incorporate that into this release.

Looking forward to the new product!

1) I'm surprised no one has asked for a "Saved Search" feature. I get tired of having to go back into the guide to search for say "triathlon" every so often. You should have a "saved Searches" slide, it can look like recordedTV with the number of hits in brackets. Clicking on the saved search would show all instances of new results for that search. If I never go into the saved search, the guide items simply expire as the guide gets updated.
2) How about bookmarks for RecordedTV and Videos. I've ripped over 300 of my DVD's to DivX format, and now that the format is supported natively, wouldn't it be nice if I could bookmark certain scenes within the Movie, a specific battle scene, or a specific comedy scene. Think bookmarking the Neo vs. multiple Smiths scene in the second Matrix.
3) How about being able to configure how transparent the overlay is when you are watching TV, say for instance you hit guide and the TV plays in the background, you should be able to configure how transparent this shows up.
4) Picture in Picture, or side by side. This has been around for ages, why is this not in WMC.

I hope someone at Microsoft actually reads these suggestions, and if you don't get to them, at least respond in kind.

Looks very nice! I love the new UI. It looks really proffesional. This interface makes WMC superior to the other media center solutions.

Unfortunately, i can't use my media center for TV, due to the lack of DVB-C. I really hope you will be able to intergrate DVB-C support before RTM. DVB-C is pretty widespread in Europe, and right now the only solution for WMC is to emulate DVB-T, which honestly isn't a very elegant solution.

Hi, nice work.

My biggest annoyance is that lack of definitive library behaviour.

For each section i.e. Video I want to be able to point it to the places I choose; I don't want that same choice popping up on the "pictures" section. And if I don't choose "My Pictures / Pictures" I don't expect to see it.

I finally got around to installing this last night but I have a fairly major problem. My setup is based around a wall-mounted touchscreen, which is mainly used for music. Unfortunately in this version the chevrons that you use to shift your album collection left or right don't appear to work anymore. This has completely crippled my experience! @Joe his Question “Will you still have the ability to create the "DVD Library"?”.
The DVD Library is renamed to “Movies” and there is no need to make registry changes for the “Movies”(AKA DVD Library)to show up in Media Center, it will show up automatically.

It looks good but I would like to see the following, some of which even basic PVR's have :-

1) Reminders. Instead of setting a future program to record have the option of setting a reminder instead which pops a message up on screen 1 min (configurable) before the program starts
2) Allow the user to configure how far back the live TV buffer goes, also make it persist across channel changes
3) Ability to record from the live TV buffer
4) Picture in Picture
5) Ability to PIN protect programs recorded between certain times. A PIN code must be entered to watch
6) Customizable/Downloadable themes, I get bored with the same look all the time

Friday, November 07, 2008 4:24:14 PM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
After getting back from the PDC, the Windows 7 excitement drove me to upgrade my old Gateway FMC-901X running MCE 2005 (pre-rollup 2) to Win7 MCE. I bought 2 GB of memory for it and a new 500 GB harddrive (so I could preserve the MCE 2005 setup). The Win7 install was a breeze. Setting up W7 MCE was also pretty easy. It even recognized my Hauppagge PVR500 card right away - nice! I also setup my XBOX 360 as an extender - also working very nicely. I pointed W7 at my Windows Home Server music, photo and DVD collection (~80 kids DVDs) and it all works great.

But (you knew there was a but coming right?), we keep getting these "Copying Prohibited - Restricted Content" messages which stops "live" TV - in the middle of the show. I was trying to watch the Browns/Broncos game last night and it did this several times at what appeared to be commercial breaks. I did a bit of research and came across the recent KB955519 patch. I downloaded the Vista version but it won't install on Windows 7 - WAH! Any chance we could get this update (even as a hotfix) on Windows 7? Pretty please with sugar on top. :-) My family would love to help you collect CEIP data (yes, I turned that on) using W7 MCE.
Saturday, November 08, 2008 5:22:20 AM (GMT Standard Time, UTC+00:00)
Thank you so much for this. I've been on MCE for a few years, and love to see it making progress.

One thing I would second (or third, or fourth) is the need to have the live tv buffer content available for recording. A lot of times I'll pause a show and come back 20 minutes later. Well, at that point I may not have time to watch everything I missed, plus all that remains. However, when I push record, it snaps me back to current time and begins recording from there. Kinda lame, since all that buffer data was stored already anyway...

But again, thank you for this! Really looking forward to getting my hands on beta next month.

Thanks for the review and apart from two major changes H.264 and the especially the onscreen keyboard (my wife says thank you and at last !) I have to echo some of the things that most of us expect of a standard PVR experience.

Firstly, the purpose of VMC or 7MC as I now call it is to provide a superior user experience that would make people use this instead of buying a DVD recorder or OVR.
1. There needs to be closer collaboration with the partners who produce the media extenders. The only decent choice except for the Xbox is the Linksys DMA2100 or DMA2200. The user experience on this is not good.

A) The startup time is horrendous (first you wait for it to power up, then you wait for it to negotiate and connect to the PC) that takes between 1-2 minutes !!!

B) How is it any extender gets out there without support Wake on LAN - No really someone has to tell me what housewife is going to walk into the office and wake up the PC when she is in the kitchen with the remote control and the kids screaming!!

Linksys have been innundated with calls on both of these issues but have not commented at all.

C'mon MS this is basic stuff and at the end of the day directly affects the perception of your product. You must have some standards and agreements to ensure your hard work produces a worthwile and usable service!

At the end of the day the boss of the house doesn't care who made the different parts that deliver the service and nor should she.

2. There needs to be more extenders (well actually at least more than the one. Only one ships an extender that works on a standard TV - Linksys)

3. When you setup the channels for the first time finding all the live channles and moving them up the list is painful. When live channels are found they should all appear at the top so you don't spend 20 minutes scrolling through 320 live and blank channels. If you do need to move channels about please please make it easier than having to go page by page with the up and down arrow on the channel you want to move it is painful!

4. I agree a clock (on every screen)

5. Also stock ticker, the weather and RSS feeds/Basic browser ! would be great - This would make it a regular item to be used every morning by the whole family before we go to work. I know this isn't available on most PVR's but that is the beauty and strength of a PC/Software based solution - you have the great opportunity to provide competely new and differentiating services that make the choice compelling as noone else in the PVR market can provide these!

6.A way of hiding or displaying content such as DVD's in different folders would be great. I have all my DVD's stored in two directories H:\DVDs\KidsMovies and H:\DVDs\ParentsMovies, they all appear in the same view
Same happens with Videos H:\Videos\KidsMovies and H:\Videos\ParentsMovies
You should also be able to lock the folder or movies via a PIN.

7. Picture in Picture

8. When In the thumbnail preview of videos, DVD's etc any item you have selected should start to play in that preview (my current Pioneer DVD recorder does this today). It allows you to recognise quickly whether you have watched this particular episode as the static thumbnail and description may not be as helpful.

9. Please provide "add recording" and "view scheduled recordings" in the programme guide. It makes sense that this feature should be available here as it is in TV and Movies

10. In the view scheduled programmes please provide multiple view styles i.e. single column, two columns (or list, grid as you have with VIEW LIST and VIEW LARGE). It reduces scrolling. You should add this to all text list views such as History of recorded programmes etc.

Once again thanks for the review and the opportunity to provide feedback and if you only provide one of the above please fix number 1 A & B

And a few more in addition to earlier post:

MHEG ADVERTISING SWITCH OFF:
===========================

Some channels have constant "Press RED button for interactive" which displays all the time onscreen. Any chance of an auto off after say 10 seconds !
Sky TV satellite boxes have this option already.

WEBGUIDE:
========
Enuff said, we all know what we need on THAT one, BUT don't limit to Windows Home Server! Some of us have proper server editions and would like to install an addin to that instead!

DVB-T MULTIPLEX:
================
If channels are on the same multiplex, then why not record up to two programmes from one tuner ?

CROSS FADE:
===========

A tick option to turn Cross fade on or off for music. A crossfade duration in SETTINGS. Currently have to go into Media Player 11 to do this simple task.

MEDIA CENTER SHELL ONLY MODE:
============================

Enhance Media Only mode so that a password of the current logged in account is required to exit Media Center and return to explorer. In SETTINGS there would be an option to have this facility on or off every time Media center Starts.

MEDIA PLAYER 11 COVER ART BUG FIXES FOR MP12:
=============================================
Fix bug (visible ONLY in Media Player) where you have a READ only share that contains your music files with embedded art (jpg 300x300 96dpi) and WMP randomly shows or does not show cover art in library view. Read only shares are usually necessary because MP11 tries to be clever and totally gets wrong cover art to create its AlbumArt.jpg files. Setting a READ only share makes VMC then show 100% correct artwork as embedded in the files.

Video Playlists for VMC:
========================
Can we have option to create and save playlists for videos. Some of us have downloaded Music Videos and would be a nice touch.

Pictures + Videos Tile in VMC:
==============================
Come on MS, how difficult is it to agree with most users and separate these two tiles ! They don't relate to each other !

Video MetaData Tags:
====================
If WMV or any other supported video formats ;) have embedded id tags then use these to create the display view (like Music)

Extenders - PIKA:
=================
Support missing zoom mode 4 for TV/Videos

MOVIES Tile in VMC:
===================
Make available to non-US areas like UK, Australia etc even if the DVD covers are not the country specific version, the info is whats needed.

BluRay Support:
==============
Just in case you missed it first time around !

Charlie, grateful if you could get these onto the right people - some are quick wins :)

I'll donate money to get this feature included. In fact if we all start a fund and take votes for top 10 improvements to incorporate will you promise to include?

1. Clive is right...we desperately need child protection features in VMC. Some of the shows I record I do not want my kids accidentally watching. Dexter is a good example. I like the idea of an optional PIN to control access to individuals recordings.

2. And as others have noted energy efficiency should be a high priority. My VMC runs 24x7, successful standby and hybrid sleep is random so I just leave it on. This needs to work better with Wake on LAN features.

3. Buffer recording please.

4. My wife still prefers the XPMCE interface over VMC for RecordedTV because you can actually read the title of the recordings easier without looking in 2 places on the screen, not sure if this is now customizable in Win7.

5. Native guide for Australia too please.

6. Additional vote for a web browser. Even just release WebChannels developed internally at Microsoft by Mike Ammerlaan. That's a sweet little app.

7. I so wish there was more intelligence between the guide and the broadcaster, In Australia some shows just do not start or finish on time. But of course VMC does what's it told to do. It usually cuts off the end of my wifes favorite shows. Nearly divorced many times.

8. Best effort recording - Again on the theme of a more intelligent guide; tuners are a rare resource. If there is a concurrency issue between recording times and available tuners; VMC should tell me about it but give me an option to record the other channel as soon it is can, even if it may be in the middle of the broadcast. Currently it just lets you choose one or the other. If this doesn't make sense I can provide example scenario.

A feature I would like is better skipping features while watching videos/tv. Kind of like the plugin Stephen Toub discusses writing here http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/bb643809.aspx. I've taken his code and modified it to jump a pre-programmed amount of time. So, for example, press the right arrow once and enter, it jumps 1.5 minutes; press twice 3 minutes, 3 times 5 minutes, 4 times 10 ... etc. This makes skipping commercials much quicker because commercials are normally around 3 minutes more or less. So I press the right arrow twice hit enter and I'm done, instead of hitting the skip button six times to jump 30 seconds per press. But it would be nice to be able to view how far it will skip on the screen as you press the arrows. However, in win 7 this won't be possible as described above "When Recorded TV (or video) is playing and you press the right or left arrow buttons you get the Now Playing experience".

Media portal is a great example of how this should work. This is an important issue to me, and I'm surprised it hasn't been mentioned. Maybe others just haven't experienced how nice it is.

Hi Charlie,

Thanks for interesting post. I like all ideas and can't wait for it... I would add couple of things:
Music
- you shoud be able to browse music on folder basis (MusicBrowser addin is great example). This is the missing part of VMC and is required because tagging in WMP is bugged and probably will be.
- missing album art downloaded from VMC (not only from WMP).
- album art visible in now playing should be fixed. now it is shown only for 1st song. For the rest you have to use 3rd party app like http://thegreenbutton.com/forums/7/155576/ShowThread.aspx
- mpc, flac, ape, ogg should be supported.
- better recognision of albums. Now some albums are splitted despite the fact that they have equal idtags. Tagging in WMP is bugged.
- special section for "active" playlists - most played, five-stars...
- more fun = more visualisation and some options to decide which information sould be visible while now playing (eg stars, genre...)
- last but not least - much better performance with large libraries.
Video
- some ppl have said it. Take it out of picture section.
- video_ts should be read w/o reg change
- resume, quick FFW & REW from pilot

Thanks

A few more requests in addition to earlier posts:
1. Sequential or random play for videos from particular folder, playlists for videos (music video clips, cartoons for children etc.)
2. EXIF metadata usage for pictures (orientation, geo-positioning etc.)
3. Please resolve the bug "Windows Explorer and Windows Media Center do not display the thumbnail for MPEG2 format video files in Windows Vista" (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/935257/en-us) - it exists in WinXP MCE and Vista Media Center.

Thing's I miss a lot in Vista Media Center with the TV Pack

1. EPG is a nice feature, but have way to many errors at the moment in Denmark. Many live news shows are listed as Repeat and there are

many other errors in comments and so on.
Could also be nice if I could extend an EPG recording while running. For use if a show or sport event is running over time ...

2. Editing the WTV files.
Why is there no editing features at all inside MCE? (or 3. party inside the Media Center interface)
Just a simple one to cut out before and after a recording would be very helpfull.
Many cheap Harddisk recorders can do that, both spilt and join recordings.
And edit of the title would also be nice.

3. Why can't time shift content be recorded ?
Would be very nice with this, rewind to a point where a newsclip start (or full program) and then press Record would result in a

recording from that time until end of show or Stop recording.

4. Why have the play back been changed, so when reaching end are the recording "rewinded" after installing the TV Pack.
Before could I check if the end of a recording was OK, by doing forward until the end and then do back a few time and playback to

check.
A goto hour:minutte function from the Info key would also be nice.

5. Teletext are much faster and better with the TV Pack.
But pressing the Teletext ALWAYS start with page 100
why not remember the last page viewed on the current channel ?
And why are it changing to sub-pages when received, very annoing that it shows the last found page while reading a sub-page.
It is not easy enabling the Hold function and it is only enabled until you exit the Teletext function.

One simple request-

Internet TV- Make it real- Hulu, ABC.com, youtube, CBS- all of those need to be there for this Windows Media Center to be current, to be cutting edge. Stop playing catch up with other computer to tv interfaces like Appletv, or PS3, or linux boxes. Really make a product that you want in your home.

Flash 10 needs to be a part of WMC, and all Extenders especially xbox360.

Hulu video is essential. 5 years from now we won't have TIVO's recording shows off of the air. TIVO's and "DVR" will actually just play shows from your internet connection.

Please don't make this a point on a to-do list for 2020. Do it now, the technology is there. If people could actually buy a Windows computer, and hook it to their xbox360 and play every video file ever including AVCHD- (home video hd standard) and MKV, play Hulu, play youtube files- elegantly and easily- now that would be something that would make the whole technology world stop and take notice, that WMC isn't some afterthought picture viewer novelty, but the very reason to buy a Windows computer over ubuntu or Apple.

If this is not even being considered, the world of internet Television streaming, then forget even updating WMC. All of these other changes will barely register. Changing deck chairs on a sinking ship. Now is the time to innovate.

Dear Charlie (and team),

First of all: Congrats! Liking the improvements very much!
As far as I can think I've only got one request:
Skinnability!

BUT, I can think of some reasons why not to integrate this. So a slightly adjusted version of my request would be:
An overall color picker!

Thanks for everything.

Great, EXCEPT... There are some basic flaws I still see.
1) Too much unused screen space combined with small fonts. Use that space! Make the fonts bigger. The screen should be EASILY READABLE. This means LARGER FONTS.
2) On-screen keyboard is TOO SMALL. It uses only 20% of the screen! I would expect it to use 80% or more. This is a prime example of whoever is designing the screen layout/font sizes being without a clue to what a normal TV viewer wants. Look at the TIVO on screen keyboard, for example. It is easily readable from across the room. Your new on-screen keyboard would need a 72" screen to easily read from across the room. We don't want to SQUINT to try to read the stuff. Either get the designer of this mess to fiox it, or get a new designer!

Charlie and Microsofties!!

Please....please....please!!

Do a "single pane of glass" for MY DVDs and allow for the "DVD Gallery hack" to be done within the MCE UI itself. Look at the elegance if the Kaleidescape/Niveus UIs and incorporate that as an optional view in MCE for Windows 7. The interface hasn't had a serious overhaul since MCE 2002.

Additionally...HD/BluRay native to MCE would be nice, or at least a MS-way of shelling out to the player of your choice and then seemlessly returning to MCE.

please add folder view as an option.
can't believe it isn't possible to browse through folders.

My music collection is quite big and obscure so a lot of stuff isn't recognised. This will be solved if you just add a folder view option

I own a huge music collection and as much as I put effort in tagging and sorting, I cannot get a much better listening experience out of it. :-(
Music and the behavier how we listen to music is totally different than movies or pictures and I start to believe, that collection management for music does not have the same effect as it has for movies and photographs.

So I am a big fan of "last.fm" because it helps me to explore new music and at the same time, it takes care of my own music preferences, without the need for spending hours, days and weeks for managing it.

To make it short: There is no media center integration of a online music community like "last.fm", which takes care of personal preferences and which helps me to explore new kind of music and artists.

I want the next generation MediaCenter, to be ahead of it's time and really develop the way how users are experiencing music. So please, add this functionality into MedieaCenter of Windos7!
