I went to fill up the gas tank in the truck the other day for nearly $70, and the tank wasn't competely empty. At $3+ per gallon it's looking more and more attractive to ride a bike to work. It saves on wear and tear on the vehicle, plus it's good for the whole cardio vascular thing, and good for the environment (unless I eat bean burritos for lunch). It's about 9.4 miles door to door, so I think it can be done in under an hour.

There is also the combo mass transit + bike which might help me ease into the rhythm. I'm thinking I would pretty much suck wind and be worthless at work if I tried to make the trip today -- I'll admit I'm horribly out of shape.

Can anyone recommend a good bicycle shop in / around the Eastside area...?

Oh, and if you happen to have a touring / commuter bike appropriate for a 6'3" male (58-59 cm frame size) you aren't using, give me a shout -- I might be interested.

You US guys are a bunch of cry faces, aren't you? ;-)

Quote; "I went to fill up the gas tank in the TRUCK the other day".

If we could get everyone in the US to stop buying trucks, then we could properly get cheaper gas.

In Denmark we have to pay $6.3 per gallon of gas, and $5.4 for a gallon of diesel ;-)

Look at what I drive to work in:

It's small, it's not much luxury, but it does 55 miles on a gallon of diesel.

Don't you cry filling up your trucks....

Without wishing to add to the 'you guys are cry babies' debate ;) - here in the UK, gas has just topped 1GBP per LITRE! (that's close to $7 a gallon, I think)

Also, if you're not in shape - twenty miles a day is a looooooooong way to cycle. Be sure you can shower when you get to work!

Best of luck, though, seriously.

Go straight to Greggs in bellevue, they will get you set up.

10 Miles is pretty reasonable, I just started biking to work and you just have to figure out how to get lunch and showered and make it work around your job.

You will be suprised at how many other bikers are out there.

Biking is my preferred way to get to work given the prices of gas and all (some 1.50e/ltr right now). I admit, my distance is only 8 kilometers a day which is not so bad. Keeps me in shape and saves me time. On my bike it's about 15 minutes whilst by car it's close to 45.

Well... @ $7 dollars/gallon (Sweden) I'm seriously considering a moped.
As you Charlie, I'm not in the best condition so to say.
They cost about as much as a bicycle and go faster =)

Driving a gas guzzler in the face of impending oil crisis just has too big of an a**hole factor IMO.

Maybe you should consider moving to MDCC (Microsoft Developer Center Copenhagen). Gas is more expensive here in Denmark, but bicycling is much more pleasant - bike lanes everywhere and very flat.
