If the MacOS is so great, why do I need Windows...?

I'm watching the Apple buzz happen again with Sean, Ed #1, Ed #2, Brian, Michael, Om, etc. over the availability of Boot Camp.

The switch page touts the Utopia of the MacOS and they have this quote from Walt Mossberg: 'It leaves Windows XP in the dust.' which just begs the following question...

If the MacOS is so wonderful why do I need to even consider running Windows?

What do I think?

Apple is going to start licensing the MacOS to third parties again. If Steve Jobs announces they have no intention to do so you can take my prediction to the bank. :-)

...for me, the only reason I haven't used a Mac before now is that I'm so familiar with Windows. It's the devil I know verses the devil I don't know. So, for me to have the ability to swap between the two would be a big step in giving OSX a try. Rather than diving head-first into the pool, I can now test the waters and really decide which one is more useful.

Because my work is in XP, but all my multimedia editing, video processing and photo editing is in OSX.

Because I'm forced to use Windows-only applications in my CpE major. I only use Windows when I must, and now I don't need two computers to do so.

Diversity seems to be a fading aspect to the computer world as more and more users forget that there is anything but Windows. Windows has had the unfortunate aspect of becoming a standard and therefore it is most attacked. In my humble opinion if Linux or Mac were as widespread there might be the same number of security holes discovered. Diversity needs to be rising, not fading. I remember when Radio Shack sold software that only worked on Radio Shack computers. I still use my TRS-80 CoCo on occasion. Bigger isn't always better.

I wasn't trying to slam the MacOS with my question (you seem to have interpreted I was, and reading back on the post, I can see you arrived at that conclusion honestly). I'm not a Windows zealot nor a Mac hater. In fact, I'm pretty sure you can find instances where I have praised Apple in the past -- and I have owned Macs over the years (not now, but thinking about getting one soon). I asked because I was perplexed by the release of Boot Camp and thought someone might enlighten me.

Anywho...

Charlie: I followed the link to quite a convincing argument: Yes, you do need Windows if you want to develop Windows software :-)

It's not that people need windows. It's that Windows has a monopoly and often the only thing people even know *exists* is Windows.

Yes, because killing the hardware division that provides most of their profits while adding much of the legacy support issues of Windows would such an obvious strategic advantage.
