Windows Media Center RSS 2.0

I'm pretty amazed that folks continue to 'discover' the great content available via Online Spotlight.

For example, Scott Hanselman (love DASBlog man!) found XM Satellite Radio for the first time today and it drove up his spouse approval for plunking down the change for his XBox 360. While Scott found XM Radio for Media Center via Download.com, it's been available for him all this time in Online Spotlight.

And if XM Radio isn't your audio thing, check out Napster, Live365, AOL Radio (Audio), AOL Music on Demand (Music Video), MTV Overdrive (Music Video), National Public Radio (NPR) or the thousands of podcasts and videoblogs available using Newsgator Media Center Edition.

Hey Scott, since I know you are a geek (major understatement of the year), what do you think about the new application platforms available for Media Center in Windows Vista? If you think these apps are pretty cool now, what until Windows Vista ships!

And Scott and all other Media Center users in the US could even know what clothes to put on without looking out of the window just by starting mceWeather on their XBox360 very easy if Microsofoft would add mceweather to the Online Spotlight as well...

Here in the UK, Online Spotlight is hardly worth looking at. As per usual, Microsoft pretends to support the rest of the world with MCE, but only does it half heartedly. I mean at least we have the guide, which mostly works, but increasingly does not. Why doesn't MTV provide Overdrive in the UK. It is not like MTV doesn't have a presence in the UK or Europe? I guess we have Cinema Now, if you are into extremely limited selections of movies.
Don't get me wrong, I think that Online Spotlight is a great idea, but it needs to apply to a lot more than just the US version of the world.

Charlie, could you comment on whether or not the 360 us using RDP to talk to MCE? It was my understanding that it wasn't that simple, and the animations would agree, but folks insist it's Remote Desktop. I think that's an interesting point of contention that's worth a post.

Here is a quick matrix on how the various types of experiences will remote to Media Center Extender on XBox 360. When I say 'Remote Desktop' I really mean technology similar to remote desktop, but not the same -- expect 3-5 frames per second, full screen updates sent over the wire. Rendered natively on the XBox 360 means we send the MCML over the wire which is interpreted and rendered on the XBox 360 (full 30 frames per second).

Hosted HTML = Remote Desktop
WinFX XBAP = Remote Desktop
Media Center Add In = Rendered Natively on XBox 360
