Go check out Windows Vista's Media Center Not Ready for Prime Time by Paul Thurrott (courtesy of Ian Dixon).

Sometimes it's not fun to beta test because of all the variables, and hardware driver issues (which seem to be the majority or root cause of Paul's bad experience with Beta 2) can make an otherwise great beta release painful.

Paul, this is an open invitation to contact me any time to get this stuff figured out -- there is no reason you need to 'go this alone' when there are resources standing by to assist.

But I did find at least one encouraging tidbit in his comments. Back in October 2005, Paul had this to say about our new horizontal navigation model...

"Instead of the simplicity and beauty, we get ... ah... a jumbled mess of album art, arranged horizontally, not vertically."

It seems to be growing on him, for now he says...

"Much of what's changed in Media Center Vista is quite good. For example, the UI is now oriented to widescreen displays such as the HDTV to which my Media Center PC is connected, and content takes advantage of this horizontal real estate by moving left to right visually, instead of up and down in a text list, as in previous Media Center versions."

Our new UI seems to be growing on him. Yay!

I love the right to left UI, having lived with it for a while. it's a natural way to go especially on a wide screen display.

I'm getting used to it.

But why are the titles of things with no album art ALL IN CAITALS, or rather

ALL
IN CA-
-PITALS

They really mess up the interface!

I've been using Vista MCE on my main HTPC since the Beta 2 release last month, and outside of the bugginess you'd expect from a beta OS, it works quite well. In my opinion, the new MCE interface is very intuitive, and it looks stunning on a 60 inch display. I hope that MS keeps the horizontal menu structure in the final release. Even though I am not able to get my M-Audio Transit device to work, and therefore no digit sound, I still do not want to go back to MCE 2005.Great work!

Hi Stuart...

In regards to your question, Matt Goyer explained that situation in his blog at this page (follow the commments) - http://mediacenter.mattgoyer.com/archives/2006/06/02/1127#comment-366

I'm hoping that you can help me troubleshoot my Vista 5384 MC DVD/Movie Problem as I can't seem to find a solution online anywhere.

I can get a DVD/HDD (ripped to hd for performance) based dvd movie to start up in MC with the menu, but once I try to navigate away from the menu system (like hitting Play Movie or selecting a chapter) it stops playing and presents stop menu. Selecting Resume just puts up a black screen, but the UI still works, so I can hit the Green Button and get the start menu overlay or More Info to get the popup menu.

I've tried several different mpeg-2 codecs to fix this and nothing changes. I've come to the conclusion that MC 5384 is buggin, as I've booted an old hdd with 5365 installed (an upgrade from MCE2005) and dvds work like magic.

Help me Charlie Owen Kenobi,
you're my only hope.

The Media Center (or in UK Centre!) is nothing more than a reskin + cablecard support. No support for MHEG services in UK, Europe and Australia meaning interactive services and digital text support is STILL not going to be available under vista despite the broadcasters giving MS all the info they need! I usually defend Microsoft, but unless they pull a rabbit out of the hat, Vista MC is not worth upgrading to in the territories mentioned unless you were getting a higher spec machine anyway. Now we have Messenger and CallerID support removed. The whole thing is in turmoil and quite frankly Microsoft deserve to have failed with MCE in Europe et all because they have missed the boat YET AGAIN by NOT REALISING that Europe does things different to the US and were first ! Vista MC won't be the mainstream replacement - why would it be ? All the broadcast services are supported by the broadcasters own set top boxes and pvr's. They also work reliably, in that they dont crash or have random black screens etc on standby resume. If they have any sense, they will delay Vista OR commit and promise that a major MC update giving functionality is released within 6 months or by SP1.

I'm having the same problem as Paul with things only working in a window. Full screen will not take any input until I hit the windows key on the keyboard and swap to a window from full screen.

Machine: Dell Dimension 5000 with Dell OEM Radem X300
TV Card: Hauppauge HVR-1100
Memory & CPU: P4 3.0ghz & 512mb

Clean install with

ATi Catalyst: DriverVer=08/25/2006, 8.29.100.0
Hauppauge Driver: DriverVer=06/16/2006,2.116.24167

I like the UI but to unleash this on the wife without her demanding a "normal" DTV box I need to sort out this full screen problem. I can wait for that all elusive "red button" to work.

Any suggestions will be much appreciated.
Greg
