I'm LOVING Office 12, especially Microsoft Access (long time fan, have used since Access 1.0 -- no, really). And things are running pretty darn solid. I wouldn't necessarily recommend this to the faint of heart, but I'm not being blocked from accomplishing any work -- and in a couple of ways I can already see how productivity will get a boost with the combination of Windows Vista + Office 12.

I don't mean to sound like a PR person here -- we still do have a significant amount of work left to accomplish -- but things are *definitely* coming together.

Heck, I might just go nuts tonight and install Adobe Creative Suite (v1) to see what happens. :-)

Update: I just showed my wife Microsoft Word 12. Her comment right off the bat: 'It looks like space, the final frontier'. That really cracked me up (and made me think we are *really* on the right track).

Update 2: Adobe Photoshop runs like a champ without skipping a beat.

How does Office 12 look with Glass? I'm curious.

Sounds cool. I would love to get Vista running on my Gateway CX200X tablet but no such luck. All recent builds blue screen in the middle of the install. I logged a bug through connect.microsoft.com but no response to the bug as of yet and it wasn't solved in the latest release (5342).

I really enjoyed using Office 12 for a few weeks but found that in combination with the latest IE7 beta on WinXP, that either Outlook or IE7 would crash quite frequently, leaving behind 50Mb+ copies of themselves in memory. The RSS support also needs, in my opinion, a lot more work - especially when keeping things 'synced' between IE7 and Outlook.

In the end I was forced - reluctantly - to revert back to Office 2K3.

This is going to be a 'killer' product once released though. I echo your words "things are *definitely* coming together"

Tron --> Is this a personal blog or corporate spin????

I believe how you view my blog is totally up to you. It is my personal blog (although I don't typically post about my personal life -- every once in while it sneaks in, but not often). I do work for Microsoft. I do post primarily about Microsoft and it's products, particularly the ones I'm involved in like Windows Media Center. I'm proud of my affiliation with Microsoft and the folks I have the privilege of working alongside.

I installed build 5342 and Office 12 and boy it was a great experience using them both. They are both a slight bit unstable but good lord 800 mb of commit charge usage! My poor test hard drive was thrashing like crazy! I hope that is not one of the "features" of the OS! I really hope MS has not tweaked or optimized or anything at the moment and everything is in the raw form right now. If that is the case then Vista is going to own...though there are talks of Vista R2 already in the horizon for 2008.

I got the same result immediately after installing Windows Vista + Office 12, but after a while the hard disk churning stopped -- it's pretty much back to what I saw with Windows XP. I'm willing to bet this is some sort of initial indexing.

But that's just an educated guess -- YMMV.

You know Charlie I think you are right. Granted I didnt play with the beta for too long...maybe a few hours but you could very well be right about the indexing feature for that really awesome search in the start menu.
