I'm really, really glad our team did the work to make these publicly available. The Media Center Diagnostic Tool gathers a lot of pertinent information very useful to the team in troubleshooting issues with Windows Media Center. If you ever file a bug report during the beta or are working with someone at Microsoft to determine what's happening it's a good idea to have these tools installed and take a snapshot of your system to share with the person helping you.

Very cool. Now we just need to know what "charlieofiji" is referencing (other than your name and fiji) :)

This is very cool-
is there a "home page" for this tool somewhere? That I might be able to check for and download updates to this app if any come?

CharlieOFiji is the machine name of his computer CharlieO stands for Charlie and his last name initial. Fiji refers to the code name for the Windows Vista TV Pack that was released at the end of last year.

Thanks for the link Charlie, I'm glad public beta testers are going to be able to submit really good media center bugs due to the availability of this tool.

Shahn is correct -- nothing more than a testing computer name.

Can this tool be useful to non-developers to log for example why Media Center wakes-up a Vista PC put in stanby 3 times a day?
Would be useful to you Charlie to investigate furhter about this annoyance?

Great tool. Would love to see this as a download for Win7 Beta available on Connect. Took ages to find!

Hi! Came across your site via a google search for "The video decoder has either malfunctioned or is not installed. Please restart Windows Media Center or the computer." and HP.

I just bought a HP Elite d5200t ATX PC machine and am getting "The video decoder has either malfunctioned or ..." every once and awhile while trying to watch live TV or watch a previously recorded TV show.

The system came loaded with Vista64 and the new TV Pack. I have a Tuner that came with the system from HP and an external USB ATI 650 tuner (ATSC and cable) - so have 4 tuners in total. 2 standard cable and 2 ATSC (over the air HD).

Any ideas on what causes the "The video decoder has either malfunctioned or ..." error message or what to check for?
